Hello, I have been using flexraid for a while now on my WHS 2011 but thinking about changing to Ubuntu.
Specs: Athlon II X2 245e with 4Gb RAM, and 14TB data and 2x2TB parity drives.
We have 2 MacBooks that connect to it for files, itunes data, etc.
Within WHS 2011 I have vmware player installed with FreeNas 8 which has access to 2 drives outside the Flexraid pool, in order to have TimeMachine running on our laptops.
All my drives are formatted with NTFS.
I have the feeling my WHS 2011 is kind of slow, especially when RDP into it but also file copying is not achieving high transfer rates (all is CAT6 FTP cables, running 1GB network). TimeMachine is slow, but I guess that is due to FreeNas in a virtual environment.
Now I am thinking about changing the setup to a Ubuntu Server and a virtual Win7 under Ubuntu solely for Itunes and Air Video Server (as the rest will run fine under Ubuntu).
* Can I have Ubuntu installed on my OS partition (formatted as EXT4 in that case) and leave my data at NTFS? Will flexraid handle data well with NTFS under linux? Or is this a bad idea with Linux besides flexraid anyway.
* Can I easily migrate the flexraid database file or do I need to recreate the flexpool? And what files do I exactly need?
* Can the Win7 have direct access to the flexraid pool or only via the virtual network? How will the performance of itunes be? (on my Macbook I have the itunes library file, but the data itself on the server)
Any other suggestions are welcome.
thanks,
Etienne
