Need to replace my SATA Controller
« on: October 20, 2011, 12:45:08 pm »
I'm trying to setup FlexRAID on my WHS 2011 system, but I'm having issues with the controller timing out and then RAID creation fails.

I'm running this on a Dell Dimenstion e520 (http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dimE520/en/SM_EN/specs.htm) with a Core2Quad Q6600 and 8GB of RAM.  My system drive is two 1TB WD Black drives in RAID1 (internal) and I have a 500GB drive for my downloading location (also internal).  For my storage I have 2 Rosewill RSV-S4-X 4-bay enclosures (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816132029).  I was attempting to create the array with 4x2TB WD Green drives (3 DRUs and 1 PPU) and the creation keeps failing due to the fact that the controller stops responding.

I'm not really in a position to be spending a ton of money to resolve this issue and I was hoping that possibly replacing the controller card will resolve the problem.  Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Jason

Try posting the logs for the failure. Maybe enable read error retry might help. The next release will deal with controllers timing out a little better.

Thanks Brahim.  I re-installed FlexRAID 2.0 Preview XII and attempted to create the array and it failed at around the 1:06 mark (6%).

Here's the end of the log

Well, I had a thought and I put the card into the PCIe x16 slot on my motherboard and I was able to create the arrany.  I wonder why this would work when the PCIx x1 card was in the x16 slot and not the x1 slot?

Maybe it needed more amperage despite being a x1 card.
