recommended auto start delay?
« on: October 24, 2011, 10:01:08 pm »
I'm wondering if there is anyway we can make the FlexRAID disk manager service dependent on whatever service controls the initialisation of drives in WHS2011 (could be windows Server Storage service - not sure) so it waits gracefully for that to fully initialise before running?

Initially I had six drives in my system and set my autostart delay to 10 seconds (10000) but after i installed another 3 drives I can only assume there was some kind of clash as i would miss 1 or 2 drives in disk manager.  Setting the autostart delay to 30 seconds (30000) solved the problem, but it is a bit of guess work.

Anyway - even if we just stick with the autostart delay functionality it is a good tip to remember - the more drives you have the longer your autostart delay should be.

thanks

John

There is a tooltip:
Quote
A delay expressing the time to wait and allow your operating system's services to fully start before initializing the FlexRAID storage pool....

I think this depend largely on your hardware.  I mean if you have good sata controller, good motherboard/cpu, then delay can even be 0.  sata controller w/ bios can already get all the drives started and the only needed is the OS to recognize.  Cheaper controller may not have all your drives recognize at power-on stage, thus it wait until OS load the controller drivers first, then it start recognize the harddrive.

500 ms works for me and such a short delay has the advantage that Windows doesn't forget my share settings.

Weird cause our systems are similar with similar amount of drives. I must admit at first i thought I had a faulty backplane but changing the autostart delay did seem to fix it. I have 6 of my drives on one of the Supermicro cards and the other 3 are run off the MB controller.

Yeah, our systems are bizarrely similar. The drives are spun up in sets of 4 before Windows starts loading so all the drives should be spun up and ready before the FlexRAID service is loaded. 30 seconds seems likes a long delay, but others have had to use delays of 5-15 seconds as well. Maybe I'm just lucky.

Well hold the phone. Last night while trying to rebuild parity from scratch one of my drives dropped out completely. Maybe I do have a faulty backplane. Would hate to have to send the chassis back but don't really know what else it could be.

drive reappeared on re-boot but will have to keep an eye on this.
