Recover says no files modified, but i changed 1 file
« on: November 08, 2012, 04:19:55 pm »
Hi, i am trying out the snapraid part of flexraid.

I tried with 2 DRU and 1 PPU. Both DRU's contain data.
To test the recovery capability i modified 1 letter in a text file. Then i did the check options.

1. Quick Validate. It says 1 file modified. OK
2. Validate. It says 1 file modified. OK
3. Verify. Verify failure: bit mismatch! OK

Then i did a restore of the disk that the text file was on.

And it says there are no files to recover !

I did a quick validate agaiun and it says 1 file modified.

Then i do a restore of the disk again and it stil says no files to recover.

I compare the files myself and they are definitely not the same.

I do a Sync and it says it detected 1 file modified.

I do a quick sync and it says Raid is OK!

Shouldn't the recover method change the file back to how it was when i took the snapshot ?

FlexRAID is about recovery missing data.
Changing data is not a failure.
To recover the file, it has to be missing. So, you will need to remove the file for it to be recovered.

Ok, that is clear. I didn't know. I thought because it is a snapshot i could return to the previous state of the files, like how the files were in the time the snapshot was taken.

How does flexraid detect bitrot then?
And if you sync every night, will flexraid see if data is changed due to bitrot and not do a sync ?
Or do you have to do a validate and when it is succesfull then a sync ?

This is not backup. People get into trouble thinking it is. Only backup can restore state.

FlexRAID is RAID and deals with recovery of a known state that has now failed.
