« on: September 25, 2011, 05:31:02 pm »
[EDIT: transfered from the old forum - still need help on Wiki!]

Here a list of needed guides.
Right now the list is draft, will be updated it based on your feedbacks.

Contributors: For those who want to contribute:
- best is to stick with doc (or rtf), with text and image, simple formatting. I'll transfer that to the wiki
- please keep the sources of your images (preferably PNG), and send them as well
- feedbacks on the list below as well as content of articles is welcome!!

A/ ABOUT: INTROS AND ARTICLES: all available in draft, to be reviewed
- What is FlexRAID, what does it do, and why is it great (intro listing features, explaining major concepts)
- About different RAID engines (Indepth article explaining the various RAID engines, and their options)
- About the different Storage Pooling modes
- About DRU Spanning (DRU spanning concept, what it brings, specific parameters and considerations)

B/ Beginners guides:
Short focused tutorials, focus on mainstream usecases, leaving most default settings
- Installing FlexRAID
- Setting up the storage pool in auto modes
- Setting up your SnapShot and running it for the first time
- Maintaining your snapshot
- Restoring lost data
- Setting up your RealTime RAID / pool and maintaining it
- Uninstalling FlexRAID

C/ ADVANCED TUTORIALS:
Some of them already online, need some cleanup
- Different merge modes: how to set them
- Detailed settings of the Storage Pool (restricted, etc.)
- Sharing folders as network shares and auto connect
- Using external shares in your RAID or your pool (see here and here)
- Using the scheduler
- The FlexRAID Expression Language
- Email, SMS and google voice notification
- Process for expanding Snapshot RAID DRU & PPU size
- Troubleshooting guide: where are the logs, how to troubleshoot, how to report an issue
- About the Snapshot RAID array maintenance: Stuff like will renamed or moved files affect recovery in FlexRAID Snapshot mode, when should I update my RAID array, what risks if not in sync and I lose a drive

D/ TROUBLESHOOTING & FAQ:
Note that this section should reduce in parallel to Brahim fixing bugs ;)
- What should I do if: Installation step 1 failed...
- What should I do if: GUI does not display correctly after first launch
- What should I do if: my shares are not reconnecting at startup
- Installation fails: http://www.openegg.org/forums/posts/list/885.page#8719

E/ TIPS:
- Important tips in using the Storage Pooling on Windows or Linux (see wiki)
- Using FlexRAID with IE9
- Running FlexRAID under a different user account for network access
- Setting up your source drives
- Backing up and migrating RAID configuration data

xliv,

Sorry for the delay. I wanted to wait until my new server was built so that I could test both Storage Pooling and Snapshot RAID. Thankfully, I got the parts on Friday and built it the same evening. I should have the Snapshot RAID/Preparing your drives guide(s) available tonight or tomorrow.

Hi - no problem.
But actually it's the Storage Pool guide that is missing, Snapshot is already online, see http://wiki.flexraid.com/2011/08/29/setting-up-your-snapshot-raid/
Thx

Sorry, I meant to say "Storage Pool". Do you want the section on preparing your drives (initializing, formatting, assigning an NTFS folder path) provided as a completely seperate howto, and then linked at the beginning?

Also, what's the significance of  "checking that your file dates are correct". Is that for general informational purposes, or something specific to FlexRAID?

Not sure yet - I think I'll try to keep everything together, and maybe later on extract that as a separate tip. So you can keep everything in 1 guide. Btw, I did it, and it sure is better...

That's actually a different topic, and can be left aside now. It's actually linked to Snapshot (I don't know why I put it there), happened to me and to a bunch of others: you get some files with modified dates in the future. Brahim may provide later on some "prepare scripts that will need to run before, to make sure the source data is correct before creating the RAID.

As someone who is relatively new to FlexRAID (and would benefit greatly from these tutorials) I just wanted to say thanks for stepping up guys. I look forward to seeing the new Storage Pool guide.

It's there! Still missing the part about sharing the pool across NW, jasonwc wrote it but I won't have time to add it to the Wiki today.

I think the new Cruise Control could use some tutorials.
Video tutorials are also welcome. :)

Do you still need a guide for setting up shares in FlexRAID GUI?

Yes, tutorials need a massive update now... I'll do that when I've got some time. About the network, jasonwc did something that I haven't got time yet to put in the wiki.

If we have tweaks or corrections for the stuff currently up on the wiki where and how can they be submitted?

You can submit them here or send me a PM. Any form OK - word doc, or just point the items that should be corrected.
