HighPoint 2720SGL (x2) or HighPoint 2740?
« on: January 28, 2013, 08:39:25 pm »
Hello all ... looks like I'll need to be replacing the controller cards in my media server.  Here are the current specs:

Athlon II X2 250 Regor
Gigabyte GA-880GA-UD3H
     - 1x PCI-Express 2.0 x16 slot (x16 speed)
     - 1x PCI-Express 2.0 x16 slot (x4 speed)
16GB G.Skill PC3 12800
2x Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 (not SAS2LP)
Corsair TX750 PSU
Windows 7 Pro (64-bit)
20x 2TB green HDD's (currently only running 11x Samsung HD204UI)

The Supermicro cards just don't seem to get along with the rest of my components.  With drives attached to one card only, I get random disk drop-outs.  With drives connected to both cards, it seems to suffer from a terrible memory leak in the Supermicro driver, which crashes my system within hours.  Details, for those who may be curious, are available HERE and HERE.

Both cards are running firmware 3.1.0.21.  I've tried both the 3.1.0.22 and 4.0.0.2010 drivers, without success.

So, I'm shopping for replacements.  Of course, I'd like to get the most stable, most robust, fastest card I can for the money.  The card must have SFF-8087 miniSAS ports.  RAID support not needed, so it must be able to operate in JBOD mode.  3TB drive compatibility preferred, but not required.   I'd like to stay under $500, total.

Areca cards seem to be out (high cost), and LSI chips are rumored to have inter-operability weirdness with Gigabyte motherboards.  Newegg also stocks HighPoint cards, and of those I'm thinking about either the 2720SGL (x2) or 2740.

Is there any (dis)advantage to running two cards as opposed to one?  Two cards would occupy both PCI-Express 2.0 slots, but there are no plans for future expansion (case only holds 20 HDD's).  Would a single card, with 4x SFF-8087 ports, be faster or more stable than two cards with 2 ports each?  The single 2740 would be about $130 higher than the two 2720's ... but what is gained for the extra bucks?

I'm also open to suggestions for other cards.  Please explain any advantages a different card may offer.  Thanks.
