Windows reports my driver version as 4.0.0.1200 (that doesn't sound right, but I guess that's what it is).  I'll have to check on the firmware, I thought it ended in a 21, but can't remember.  I don't THINK the drives on this card spin down right now.  But I haven't tried the .inf editing mentiond in this thread yet.  I have a new controller on the way, if/when I get it working correctly, then I'll see how much luck I have getting spin-down to work.

I tried all firmwares and drivers including the ones you mentioned.

The strange thing is that I had the drives spinning down before and I donĀ“t know what I have changed that is preventing the drives from spinning down.

dscline,

I don't think that the inf change would work. Look:

Quote
Storport IPM is supported in the following system configuration only:

Systems that use a SATA adapter with a single SATA disk drive attached

Storport IPM is not supported in the following system configurations:

Systems that have non-direct attached storage (FC, iSCSI, and others)

Systems that have external storage arrays and RAID controllers

Systems that have MPIO

Systems that have non-SATA host bus adapters

Systems that have more than one disk attached to a SATA adapter

Well, perhaps timotl will have to clarify:
I tried the modification on my 2 LSI cards and now the drives do spin down via the power setting in control panel.
He doesn't specify which LSI cards he has, but I'd have to assume they are either SAS compabible HBAs or RAID controllers, which Windows generally puts in the "SCSI / RAID" category.  And People don't usually buy those to put just one drive on.  ;)

I reinstalled all my system again, WHS included.  Even with flexraid not installed I could not get the drives to spin down.

Firmware update must have messed something up.

Finally figured it out.
Firmware update must have set the same SAS ADDRESS to all ports.

Now everything is good.

Wow, I didn't check this thread and it got a lot of attention recently.

Well, I have the second version of the card - AOC-SAS2LP-MV8, and contacted Supermicro support a while ago. Got a very short answer with no further replies - "It should work". Well, it does not. I recently reinstalled my OS and noticed that the drives were not spinning down even without FR installed. Also, there is nothing there that would keep accessing the drives.

I will try that INF hack and see if that works.

Cassius, thanks! Could you please tell me where I can check that? I quickly looked at the properties of "Marvell 94xx SAS/SATA RAID Controller" in Device Manager and didn't see anything related to SAS addresses in the properties on the device there...

During boot, you have to hit ctrl-m until you see the AOC-SASLP-MV8. The first screen will list the ports and current sas addresses.

Write down all the info you see. That should be:

- VendorID:DeviceID
- Bios Version:
......
and so on.

@Cassius

So if you've determined that it is giving them all the same SAS address, how do you change it?

By running the bios update utility with the correct config file. I only tried that with firmware 3.1.0.15N.

I might try updating to 3.1.0.21 but I not sure yet as my system is running fine.

Ok, thanks man. I will need to do it soon, but my server is headless so I need to get a display to it first.

Do you have SAS or SAS2 version of the board?

As for updating BIOS (I assume you mean SAS2 board firmware). I've got firmware 4.0.0.1800 from  Supermicro site.

Mine is the first version AOC-SASLP-MV8.
Not sure if SAS2 is the same case.

OK, Just confirmed that it is setting my SAS addresses to the same one for all my disks.  I'll have to fiddle with this later when I have time, but thanks for the heads up on this issue and the direction to go Cassius!

I also have an onboard SAS chip with 2 ports that does this as well.  They're both (onboard and AOC-SAS chipsets) from Marvell so I should be able to find a solution for both.  I'll report back when I figure it out.  This might be part of my problem with throughput from the card being bundled per physical mini SAS port as well.
