Well subject says it all.

Can someone help me with this?

I am considering in buying an HP DL180 G5 and populate all 12 drive bays.
Unfortunately it comes with HP P400 controller, which does not allow for JBOD configuration.
This will mean configuring disks as separate RAID0 arrays:
1) No "physical" drives seen by OS.
2) No SMART.
3) Might need to reformat each disk.
4) Hot-plug says goodbye (as missing a full array means you need to reboot).
5) Not sure how many arrays will let me create.
6) Performance issues.

So... the subject says it all: Is there a controller I can use to REPLACE the P400, usable (and bootable) by DL180 that supports JBOD AND can use the backplane connectors of the DL180 AND support 12 disks? (or 2x6 I guess?)

Any expect help will be appreciated.

Curious what you ended up doing?  I'm in a similar situation, trying to re-purpose an older HP storage server.  The P400 doesn't support JBOD apparently and using Raid0 to recognize every drive is an accident waiting to happen.  I'd like to install FreeNAS but I'm in the beginning phases of searching for cards and was hoping someone had already been down this long and lonesome road.

Any info would be great.

Kind Regards,
Seth

Get a couple of 8 port LSI cards with IT firmware?
