Cannot delete or edit files using storage pool
« on: September 26, 2011, 09:56:27 pm »
I am in the middle of trying to setup my media server with FlexRAID. This is some awesome software I must say. However when I try to enable the storage pool I am able to write to the pool drive but cannot for the life of me figure out how to delete or rename a file. Every time I try to delete a folder or file it either just does nothing and sits there. I have tried removing (properly) all of FlexRAID and reinstalling the newest 2.0 XII but it still will not work.

Right after I start the service I am able to work with the files and rename/delete for a few minutes tops. Then files I have "deleted" magically reappear. I have to stop the service in the web gui and in the windows services then go delete the file/folder manually from the individual drive it was on, then re-enable the services. Something must be misconfigured. Can anyone help?

FlexRAID 2.0 XII on win 7 ultimate 64bit

There are still some problems with current implementation when deleting folders (especially the ones that just have been created, or when deleting folders containing a subfolders tree and files). Maybe those will be solved by the new implementation that Brahim is working on.

But I've never had problems deleting files.
If you have those, you may want to enter a bug in bug.flexraid.com providing your logs.

I had an issue where if I created a new folder (created more recently than the last boot cycle), deleting the file would cause the file to disappear and then reappear after a refresh of Windows Explorer. Attempting to delete the folder again would result in a "Location not Available" message. However, any files located in the folder would be deleted. Brahim indicates that the issue was been resolved for the next release.

However, you say that you're having issues both with deletion AND rename operations? I have had no issue deleting "older" folders and reneme operations should work OK.

The issue you describe on deleting a folder that was just created also exist when you try to rename it:
- create a folder "New Folder"
- press enter
- try to rename it
-> you'll get the same kind of error

I haven't seen that. I often create new folders, hit F2 to rename, and it works without issue. I'll try again tonight, but I'm pretty sure I haven't seen this issue when renaming folders.

Guys you NEED to provide OS and other details.

An XP x86 is way different than a 7 x64 for example.

I guess you're right - anyway mine are provided in my signature. As for the OP (same Win7 64b).

The delete issue has already been reported on the Bug Tracker and was apparently fixed by Brahim. See http://bug.flexraid.com/view.php?id=90

In any case, I have replicated the issue on WHS 2011 and Windows 7 x86.

I fixed this issue just before I decided to re-work the storage pool functionality.

There was a low level bug that I had to fix.
For now (and I know it sucks), to delete a folder you have delete all of its files first to avoid these occasional hiccups.

I see the same issue even when the folder is empty so long as the folder was created since the last boot cycle. In fact, the problem occurs for newly created folders that never contained data.

There might be some hidden system files, like desktop.ini.

I guess Brahim and jasonwc are talking about a different issue:
- one is an issue related to folders (full or empty) that we try to delete just after creating them (withouth rebooting or restarting the service) - they won't go away right away, will become unaccessible, but will disappear the next time the service boots
- one is related to folders, old or new, containing files & subdirectories - here it's now necessary to empty the folder before deleting it

Both are bugs, and I'm assuming we won't see them in the next implementation.

Thanks for the clarification xliv. I had not experienced the other bug.

Thanks for the replies all. I can wait till the next iteration of FlexRAID to come out that hopefully will fix these issues. The main problem I had was I use Wuala and trade local storage for storage in the cloud. This program does a lot of small changes to various files. Having the cache folder on the storage pool threw Wuala for a loop! So for now till all this is resolved I will just simply leave the wuala cache folder on a regular drive and use the storage pool strictly for my media.
