Performance issue
« on: September 05, 2013, 10:52:38 am »
Hi

I’m having a performance issue when copying files to the pool or to the drives directly.
My setup is 3 X 3TB Seagate 7200.12 drives running on a saslp mv8.
I’m seeing transfers speeds ranging from 25MB/s to 43MB/s, with the standard setup. I still believe that this setup should be faster from the get go. I initialised the drive with a throughput of 287.8 MB/s. My expectations are around 65-70 MB/s.

My questions:
1) Are my expectations to high?
2) What kind of transfer speed are people getting (please mention your setup)?
 3) Any ideas what could be wrong or how to troubleshoot the problem?

Thanks in advance

tRAID hasn't optimized for speed yet.

Also, have you enabled any performance options in RC7 anyway?

Hi

I haven't played with any of the performance options yet, but I still think the current numbers are low

That's what I'm getting, too. I went from around 100 Mb/s to barely faster than USB 2.0 speeds. I guess that's the price we pay for getting live parity computation. My CPU is an FX-3850 and I have 32 gigs of RAM. It's certainly not a hardware issue. My initial throughput was 586.9 Mb/s.

The only thing I've tweaked is the TCQ (changed it to true). If there's any boost in speed it all, it's nothing noticeable. I'm still getting 30-40 Mb/s.

I have tried the performance optimizations in the forum, and I can't see any noticeable differences either.

Any comments from The Powers That Be? The speed issues are a dealbreaker. I didn't put together a monster system only to be saddled with barely USB 2.0 transfer speeds because of software RAID.

Can we expect any improvements down the road? And if so, how much? I'm used to 100 Mb/s. ~30 Mb/s isn't going to cut it.

Check out the performance threads.

There is something in the works that will bring more performance, but it will cost more money.

There are two performance profiles:
- the base performance as currently released (TCQ + SWO)
- the enhanced performance (to be released later for additional cost)

If the base performance isn't cutting it and you are on a budget, then you will do best to look elsewhere. Maybe stick with RAID-F.

Hi, i think i'll get that, hopefully the performance edition will come soon, are the read speeds supposed to be alright with the current rc? I haven't tested it yet as i didn't feel an impact, just on writing but wondering before i test.

Really happy with transparent raid right now and i'm sure it iwll only get better :), can't wait to buy it.

Ok read tests averaged around 110 mb/s with gigabit
