Single computer drive upgrade with RAID-F vs tRAID
« on: January 07, 2014, 05:58:47 pm »
Hi Guys,

I have been going through the web site and trying to decide if I should go with RAID-F or tRAID.  I very much like the snapshot RAID feature of RAID-F but I am concerned that RAID-F will not support easy drive upgrading, which is essential for me.  The following is a quote from http://wiki.flexraid.com/about/what-is-transparent-raid/ and so it seems tRAID fully supports what I need but let me clarify my exact requirement.

"New drives being protected can be added while preserving their existing data. "

I currently have about seven (7) hard drives of various sizes in my server and with the inclusion of an optical drive all eight SATA ports are used.  The smallest hard drive currently in use is a 500GB.  Right now I have ample free space but I am sure that in the not too distant future I will need to replace this small drive with something larger (I'll use 4TB here as an example).

When I replace the 500GB drive with the 4TB drive I will:
1. Temporally remove one of my other drives (lets say a 2TB drive for this example) from the system.  This will free up one SATA port for the new 4TB drive
2. Startup the computer and partition the 4TB drive with one primary partition of maximum size
3. Copy all the content on the 500BG drive to the new 4TB drive
4. Shutdown the computer, remove the old 500BG and reconnect the 2TB drive I temporally removed earlier.

The quote above seems to indicate to that tRAID will support this function however I am not certain and I have not read anything about RAID-F which would suggest it would provide this function.

Does RAID-F and/or tRAID support this sort of hard drive upgrading?

I thank you in advance for your assistance.

I hate when I ask stupid questions.

tRAID
http://wiki.flexraid.com/2013/06/27/raid-reconfiguration-in-transparent-raid/

RAID-F
http://wiki.flexraid.com/2011/07/05/process-for-expanding-snapshot-raid-dru-ppu-size/

So it seems that either tRAID or RAID-F will be acceptable for my needs.
