Unable to start pool due to trans cache error
« on: March 28, 2014, 09:15:57 pm »
Hi,

I've been using FlexRAID for about half a year now. It's been working great without issue. :)

Yesterday I discovered that the storage pool hadn't started. It's set to automatic start. I tried starting it manually but get the following error: "Operation Failure. ERROR: Unable to delete trans cache! Size=0".

I did a search on the forum and there it was suggested to run UserMode.cmd and reboot. I did this and there error is still there stopping the pool from started. I then uninstalled FlexRAID, upgraded to the lasted version, and tried starting the pool again, but the error happens again.

What is the trans cache and where is trying to be deleted from? What should I do now?

Log is available here: https://onedrive.live.com/?cid=e46a94bb5ae53bd9&id=E46A94BB5AE53BD9!2954

Thanks for your time and help.

Regards,
David.

You are using RT RAID. Try a reboot.

Hi Brahim,

Thanks for the reply.

Here's what I have tried so far:

- a reboot.
- running UserMode.cmd followed by a reboot.
- uninstalling FlexRAID and reinstalling with v2.0u12c.

I'm still getting the error after trying these things. What else should I try and what could be causing this issue? What is the trans cache that can't be deleted, is it a file or something else?

Thanks again for your help.

Regards,
David.

Open your PPU disk (add a drive letter to it if necessary) and find a file named TRANS.cache.

Hi Brahim,

Thanks for the reply and help. Hopefully we're getting closer. :)

I stopped the FlexRAID service and assigned a drive letter to the drive. Then I deleted the TRANS.cache file (it was size 0kb). I then removed the drive letter, started the service, and tried starting the pool. It didn't start and threw up the same error. I assigned a drive letter again and noticed that the TRANS.cache file was recreated with size 0kb.

I then stopped the service, deleted the file, removed the drive letter, and rebooted, hoping that would help. Upon reboot the pool wasn't started. Trying to start manually and the same error occurs. The TRANS.cache file is there with size 0kb.

Hope this information helps.

Thanks,
David.

1. Look for TRANS.cache.bak and delete it if it exists.

2. Post the full logs in TRACE mode.

Hi Brahim,

There was no BAK file.

I've enabled trace logging, rebooted, and tried starting the pool, with the same error. The log is here:

Hi Brahim,

Did you get a chance to look at the log yet?

And do you know of anything further I can try to get the pool started? Or what should I do?

Thanks,
David.

No idea unfortunately.
The only thing I see is some back up actions, and I am not sure if you are restoring or backing up.
A restore would copy in the invalid TRANS.cache. So, don't use that backup.

What I now did was to delete the pool and recreate it. First time it wouldn't complete. Then I formatted the parity drive and it then worked.

Back up and running now. :)

David.
