Files not balancing space wise
« on: April 12, 2016, 01:43:32 pm »
I have found since I had to reinstall (OS hdd died) that flexraid is not seeming to put files on the hdd with the most space anymore.

http://puu.sh/ofOPx/0bfd6a7519.png shows the hdd with space and DRU4 with the most spare by a margin of 130GB, but if I copy say 10 5GB files over it does not reduce down to 595GB remaining but all the drives take some of the files.

Pooling is set to Auto Space priority, flexraid restarted after setting applied but still does the same.

I want the files to go to whatever hdd has the most space remaining.

Space balancing is done on a best effort possible and with other things accounted for. Space is given a priority in the logic, but other things might weight more. So, things will not even out perfectly.

There are cases like when writing multiple files whose sizes are not known beforehand. In such cases, the files are spread randomly to the disks. However, depending on the final sizes of the files being written, some disks might get their space used more than others. Over time though, things will even out.

So, stop stressing over it as it is balancing just fine.
