General Questions about flexRAID - F
« on: August 28, 2016, 12:40:18 pm »
Hello,
My current setup is to slow. Im running Unraid and i doing a upgrade to a 10G Network right now, so im looking for a faster OS.

Hardware:
Intel i3-6300 | 16 GB ECC RAM | 4*4TB WD Red + 3*3TB WD Red + 240GB Cache SSD + 32GB SSD for OS

I stumbled uppon flexRAID by searching ZFS alternatives, but before i buy a license i just wanted to ask a view things (I intend to use Linux-Ubuntu as a base OS since there is no standalone version of flexraid):

1. What read/write speeds can i expact? Is there Cached read/write boost?

2. Can i handle shares like SMB directly in flexraid or do o have to do that on Linux?

3. I plan on split my data so i only have files in my Raid-F that dont change often (i read this: http://www.flexraid.com/faq-items/transparent-raid-vs-raid-over-file-system/ ) however i was wondering: since this is a raid over (On top?) of a Filesystem how can it protect my data with features the underlying Filesystem dont have? How does it handle Datarot? The table shows its supported.

4. How does the parity work? I understand that parity is split over all the drives in the pool, and i can select how much id like to have, but what happens if i lose more discs than i have parity backed? (For example: I have 10 discs 1 Parity drive, two of them fail)

Thanks for the help!

Hello,

1.) I have moved files around from disk to disk and have had number between 50 and 100MBs. Averaging out at around 60MBs.

2.) I use Windows and smb shares while using Flexraid. No problems.

3.) Know nothing about datarot.

RAID-F doesn't protect against datarot / bitrot per se; however it will (or only maybe if you've run an Update) detect it with Validate or Verify.

I guard against bitrot by creating 1% PAR2 files for all my critical data.
