Most new files transferred into flexraid is unable to play
« on: September 04, 2015, 02:44:41 am »
Hi all.

I have installed Raid-F 2.0.
This install is in a standalone PC used as a NAS on my network.
The system consists of 3 2Tb data HDD and one 3Tb parity HDD

I normally download files on my main PC and then transfer the files to the flexraid system through the home wired network.
Over the past few months, almost 90% of my downloaded files seem to hang when played on another PC through the network.
First I though maybe it's the network, so I tried playing it directly on the flexraid PC and still face the same problem.
First it was huge files, files over 1Gb, but now almost all files. Video files mainly but sometimes audio files too.
I should add that the files will initially play, but after a few minutes, sometimes 10 minutes and sometimes 30 minutes, only then it will hang.

When this first happened, I was on the older Raid-F. So I updated to the 2.0 but I'm still having the same problem.

The pooled drives are lettered V:
I have a small partition C: just for the Windows 7 OS

I play most media files through Plex Media on 3 other PCs at home plus some portable devices.

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried to play those files outside of the pool?

A good test would be to checksum one of the file, transfer it to the pool with the checksum file, and then validate the file's integrity. It would be good to check the file's integrity both in and outside of the pool.

Thanks for the reply.

The original file is still on the main PC....works fine.
I tried the checksum MD5 verification between the files on the main PC and the ones in the pool....all matched.
I tried transferring new files and the MD5 matched too.

It seems only new files in the past 6 months or so.
Files which were transferred earlier than that has no problems in playing.

I want to say it's the copying of the files over the network into the pool but other files which I've copied to outside the pooled drives seems to be fine.

The Health Monitoring software doesn't show me any errors.

I've turned off Norton's Network Drive Scan. I don't know if that's the problem.

If file integrity checks out and you can eliminate the network (as you say the issue is both local and remote), then check the Windows event viewer.
Check the sys logs too (FlexRAID.sys.c1-1.log).
There could be disk time out issues.

Did a check on the Event Viewer and got numerous error messages.

Err... address the issue of the disk with bad block?  ???
Most likely the disk is failing. Backup your data and replace it.

Sorry for a noob question but how do I identify which disk is the problematic one?
