SATA controllers
« on: March 29, 2012, 12:45:45 pm »
What are the general recommendations for setting up drives on the SATA controllers?
For example, if a system has two sata controllers, should the OS drive be separate from the drives in the FlesRAID pool? Should the PPU(s) be on a different controller than the DRUs?
Does it matter?
Thanks,
Ari

Bump?
Just wondering if buying an additional sata controller would speed things up, and what are the recommendations for which drive goes on which controller

There is no hard rule.
You just don't want your OS to starve for IO.
So, other drives can be on the same controller as long as everything performs okay.

Would putting the PPU on a different controller than the DRUs speed up transfer speeds to/from the FlexRAID pool? Would it speed up Update operations?

It all depends.
It all boils down to making sure nothing is I/O starved as your slowest performing drive will be your bottleneck.

So, configure things such that there is a balance.
