FlexRAID finds files as new that are not new.
« on: April 25, 2012, 09:48:44 pm »
Every few days I run Update then I look at the log to see what it finds as new. Today it found a file that has been on the drive since I initialized the RAID. Nothing has changed as far as permissions or location. I have noticed this behavior in the past but never gave it much thought.

Any ideas?

Did you check the dates on the file?  I had 4 files last week that showed as new even after an update and I finally realized that the dates had been screwed up and were set way in the future.  Still don't know how that happened.

Yep you're right.

Why today with a date in November? Kinda weird.

Any way for FlexRAID to handle this kind of situation?

Since part of the FlexRAID paradigm is that it will never alter your data, there is really no way to do that.

To easily fix the issue:
- Download: http://download.openegg.org/temp/touch-for-windows.zip
- Run the optional shell extension
- Touch each of the files logged in as corrupted
- Run update

It linux so no download required  :), I touched the entire pool with a date in the future five min after finding the date problem. That was the only file found.

I was just wondering if FlexRAID could still see a file a new regardless of the date. IMO just the existence of the file should be enough to trigger it as new.

I was having the issue where quick verify was reporting 2 new files even after updates.
Found the two files doing a search for files with dates in the future. Those files dates were showing correcly in windows(no future date). Anyway I changed the dates to today and now quick update does not report 2 new files anymore.

Maybe Flexraid has some issues with files with dates in the future ?

Well, files should never have dates in the future.
There are certain file system contracts you have to abide by to make things work on a consistent basis.

The behavior is intentional.

Now, I will add something in the System Control Panel to scan for files with dates issues (similar to the scan for hard links feature).

Agreed with files should not have dates in the future.

But an important question:
If quick verify keeps reporting any number of new files even after updates, does that mean that those files are not protected? That is, they are not part of the parity?

If that´s the case, it is a big issue and users must be aware that there is something wrong and it should be taken care of.  Searching for files with dates in the future and fix them was enough for me.
