Well, I got my help ticket in with HighPoint and they answered my questions I had. It looks like they're going to work on putting SMART pass-thru into future drivers for this card. But in the meantime they helped me out by linking me to this utility: http://www.highpoint-tech.com/BIOS_Driver/GUI/win/WebGui-win-v1.5.6-100615.zip

Their web utility recognizes the DC7280 card and all the drives attached. You can set the spin-down time you want if you don't want to use the Windows utility, and you can also view all the SMART information for each drive and have it email you when there are SMART errors detected. =)

Now, will Highpoint utility work as expected? That is, will it wake up all the drives to read smart values every now and then or it will let the drives asleep?

It has an available scheduler to read the SMART values and send you email reports, so yes. Several years ago I was using it on another HighPoint card I had. It doesn't need to spin back up the drives to read the flash memory on the hard drive controller chipset.
