SATA controllers vs. raid controller
« on: June 27, 2012, 02:41:40 pm »
Hello Everybody,

Hardware question round SATA controller vs. RAID controller.

With Flexraid, do i need to buy a RAID controller or can i just buy a 6 port SATA controller card and be done with it?
is one better then the other?

With Flexraid, do I need a raid controller?

Looking to build a basic media server:
- the server will stream moves to PS3 and other devices.
- at best I would have 1 maybe (strong maybe lol) 2 people accessing  the media server at one time.
- I do have large move files

Hi tcgl,

As flexraid does the raid for you, you do not need a raid controller as the raid function of the card does not get used.
The plain sata Controller is also cheaper than Raid Controller. As you can make the flexraid bigger as your data grows, you could start by using the 4 free sata ports on your motherboard (If you have 6 ports and 2 are used for OS dive and DVD-drive).

Additionally, some of the newer motherboards (Asrock H77) have 8 sata ports.
