General Discussion / Any licensing issues with a FlexRaid virtual server?
« on: October 31, 2013, 10:34:19 am »
I'm considering running FlexRaid on top of Open Media Vault, inside a virtual machine (VirtualBox), to run a simple NAS (5 drives, snapshot).

I can dynamically configure the virtual machine's system resources (RAM, Processors, Execution Cap).

Will changing the virtual machine's system configuration invalidate a FlexRaid license?

General Discussion / How CPU intensive is snapshot?

How CPU intensive is FlexRAID when calculating/comparing snapshot parity?

I'm trying to decide between Intel i3, i5, i7.
This will be for SOHO storage/NAS.

Buying Recommendations / When should ECC Memory/RAM be considered?

When should ECC Memory/RAM be considered?

I'm building a file server/NAS for SOHO.
I'm presuming I don't need a lot of RAM (2 GB, maybe 4 GB if there's a small price difference).
I don't want data integrity problems at the storage level (data + parity).  High quality data storage is desired.

RAID-F on OpenMediaVault / INSTALL OMV: FlexRAID initialized with errors
« on: October 22, 2013, 09:27:54 pm »
I have followed the wiki to the best of my ability, and I ran into an error at "Configuring FlexRAID, step 2:

"FlexRAID initialized with errors"

The log says something about a permission denied error after "Scheduler flexraid_$_1 started".  Then shutsodwn "Quartz".

Any ideas?

General Discussion / Datarot detection
« on: October 19, 2013, 12:39:48 am »
Can someone please explain to me "Datarot detection" (aka bit rot, bit decay)?

How does FlexRaid detect rot?
What does FlexRaid do when it detects rot?
Does data rot put parity at risk?

RAID-F Feature Requests / Offsite Backup into Cloud (e.g Amazon S3)

Backup folder/files to cloud (Amazon S3) for offsite backup and disaster recovery.

RAID doesn't do me any good if my enclosure is stolen or damaged.

Snapshot RAID / How much storage does parity consume?
« on: May 02, 2012, 05:00:35 pm »
If I have a 1 TB drive and I want to RAID the drive via parity, how much storage will parity consume?

Is there a way to estimate storage size?
