News and Updates / FlexRAID One (Roadmap)
« on: December 01, 2017, 08:10:54 am »
FlexRAID One™
Alright guys, time to start talking of what's next for FlexRAID.

The past direction was to have 3 products:
  • FlexRAID RAID over File System (RAID-F)™
  • FlexRAID Transparent RAID (tRAID)™
  • FlexRAID Standards (sRAID)™

The current direction is for a unified platform: FlexRAID One™.

The benefits are numerous with the most important being:
  • streamlined development
  • and product features being fully available across the board
As an example, the Storage Pooling feature is far more up to date on tRAID than it is on RAID-F. Many RAID enhancements present in tRAID/sRAID are missing in RAID-F. There are going to be new monitoring and management features that will be common across the products. Rather than releasing such new features on one product and porting them later to the other products, it just makes sense to have a singular platform where all features are delivered.

Roadmap
  • Port RAID-F to run natively
    • RAID-F already follows a client/server model just like tRAID does (service currently runs on 9595 and UI on 8080) even though it is a single package install
    • The server part of RAID-F will be ported natively and merged into the tRAID service broker
    • The client (UI) part of RAID-F will be rewritten into the current tRAID UI
  • Transform the current tRAID UI into the new FlexRAID One UI
    • This new unified UI will manage any number of hosts regardless of the OS and will support managing RAID-F, tRAID, and sRAID arrays.
    • This unified UI will have two modes:
      • the current tRAID style mode, which will be known as the advanced configuration mode
      • a new simplified mode, which will be known as the quick setup/monitoring mode
  • Improve RAID-F
    • A few mechanics in RAID-F need to be fully re-implemented. We'll discuss those during beta releases.
    • Add more automation to RAID-F. One such automation is being able to collaborate with the Storage Pool to detect important data changes and trigger the Update task or notify the user of Update being needed.
  • Improve tRAID (already done, just waiting for release)
A lot of significant improvements were made to tRAID that have yet to be released. We will discuss of them during beta releases.
  • Improve monitoring and user notification
    • Users have long complained of the email/sms/UI messages needing major improvement. So, this will be worked on.
    • Overall though, FlexRAID One as a platform will need new monitoring features as well as a new elegant monitoring dashboard.
  • Release sRAID (ready, only needs UI re-work)
  • Release new RAID engines (already fully implemented, only need to be released)

*** This is not a thread for rants. If you have nothing constructive to say, keep it moving! :) ***

All, here is an updated guide on setting up RAID-F on OpenMediaVault: http://wiki.flexraid.com/2017/11/28/flexraid-raid-f-on-openmediavault/

A guide is being worked for tRAID.

General Discussion / New tRAID performance features: SIMT & Write Chatter
« on: November 26, 2017, 10:04:47 am »
For those that paid attention, you have noticed new configuration options in the latest releases.
SIMT: Windows and Linux
Write Chatter: Linux

SIMT: Single instruction, multiple threads
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_instruction,_multiple_threads
Quote
Advanced RAID Performance Scaling through SIMT (Single Instruction, Multiple Threads).
SIMT results in higher CPU usage in order to achieve higher performance. So, it should be disabled (set to 0) or scaled down (less than the optimal value) if your system's priorities call for low RAID CPU usage.
The optimal SIMT value is the number of virtual cores in the system (e.g., 8 if single quad-core CPU with HT)
Increasing SIMT past the optimal value can result increase performance but only at a marginal rate. A too high SIMT value will actually degrade performance (typically, anything passed double the optimal value).

Write Chatter
Quote
Write chatter is a proprietary technology we have developed to improve IOPS and throughput on low latency devices.
It only works when all devices in the array are low-latency devices (typically SSDs) and has the opposite effect on high-latency devices (low RPM HDDs).
Again, do not bother with this feature unless you have disks with really fast access time as it will negatively affect your RAID performance otherwise.

Please post your findings when enabling these new features.

FlexRAID™ on Windows / tRAID pool auto-start
« on: March 08, 2017, 07:58:41 am »
Hi. Sorry for bumping an old thread but I can't seem to get my storage pool to auto mount on Windows 10.
I've set both the "NZFS Web Client Service" and "NZFS Broker Service" to Automatic (Delayed start) but even after 4 minutes nothing happens.
I have to manually go into the WEBgui and start the storage pool.

I also tried to add a dependency via CMD "sc config FlexRAID depend= Netman" but got the following error:
[SC] OpenService FAILED 1060:

The specified service does not exist as an installed service.

Any help would be appreciated.

For tRAID, pool and array automatic start is configured at the RAID config level. No need to delay start the service or setup service dependencies.
Please see wiki for configuration.

Alright guys, this is a topic I wanted to cover and get more clarity on for a while and even before my hiatus.

Both releases of tRAID and RAID-F from November 2015 should have a fix that allow shares created on both the pool and sub-folders within the pool to be remembered.
In prior releases, there was an issue that prevented Windows from doing so and users were required to go to the Web UI and click on a menu option to have shared remembered.

This should no longer be needed as shares created on the pool disk as well as folders within the pool disk should be remembered.
For users on the latest release where this isn't working, please post here so we can investigate as to why that is.

The option to have shared remembered will be removed from the Web UI in future releases.

tRAID Bug Reports / Looking for tRAID bug fix testers
« on: January 03, 2017, 09:20:38 pm »
Guys I am working on resolving the set of outstanding issues prior to the next major release.
The idea here is to push out patches where possible prior to the next major release. This way, users can enjoy fixes without having to commit to the major release.

Though comprehensive testing is being done on my end, it would be great to have a few users preview the fixes and validate them.

The first possible patch is one that fixes the Universal Recycle Bin (URB) issue whereas files are inadvertently being moved to the URB.

Please post in this thread and you will be PM'ed with details.

Thanks.

News and Updates / I am Back
« on: April 04, 2016, 11:24:37 am »
Well well well...

Looks like things went a little crazy during my absence.  :P

1. First apologies for things not being properly handled during my hiatus. We also had some rather dedicated spammers  :-[.

2. Thanks to all those that stuck around and helped other members. Your efforts are much appreciated and have not gone unnoticed.  8)

3. I am back from a well deserved hiatus. Those that have been around long enough know that I do this every few years. I basically disconnect and go to a secret place to re-energize.

It will take me a few more days for me to catch up with everything, but things shall resume proper due course shortly. Cheers!  :)
